Pledge to Vote Yes for Maryland PIRG

Vote YesWe the undersigned University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students support the continuation of a chapter of the Maryland Student Public Interest Research Group (MaryPIRG) at UMD.

We pledge to vote yes on the following referendum question on the April 20th and 21st SGA election ballot:

MaryPIRG, the Maryland (Student) Public Interest Research Group, is a statewide, student directed, student funded, non-profit, non-partisan organization, which does research, education, service, and action on environmental, consumer protection, higher education, and hunger relief issues. MaryPIRG was established at the University of Maryland in 1973. In the past, MaryPIRG has typically employed a staff of professional organizers and advocates paid for by part of your Student Activities Fees to work with students on issues that concern them as citizens. Currently, the SGA By-Laws prevent SGA recognized organizations from allocating any of their student activity fees budget for funding student salaries, staff salaries, employee salaries, or any other compensation that may be interpreted as wages or salaries. However, contingent upon a favorable student wide referendum every two years, MaryPIRG is exempted from the provisions of the section that prevents funding of wages or salaries.

Do you support the exemption of Maryland PIRG from that section of the SGA By-laws so that their request to fund a Campus Coordinator and State Director through the student activities fee can be considered by the Student Government Association?
