Campaign | Energy

100% Renewable Energy

We all know that burning oil, gas, and coal has polluted our air, water, and land for decades - and now it's changing the climate even faster than scientist feared it would. We know we can have healthier communities right now and a livable future for ourselves and generations to come. But to get there, we must transform the way we produce and consume energy. That's got to start with a commitment to 100% clean, renewable energy.

Campaign | Transit

21st Century Transportation

From high speed rail to mass transit, it’s time for us to get on the right track.  Bay Staters all want a safe, clean transportation system that lets us all get where we need to go – but our current system just isn’t working.

Campaign | Higher Ed

Affordable Higher Education

A college degree is practically a necessity these days, not only for the individual student, but for the economic and social health of the country. But as states cut budgets, and grant aid has diminished, students are relying on loans to pay for college.

Campaign | Hunger

Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness

We know we can live in a world where everyone has a roof over their head, enough food to eat and access to clean drinking water. Unfortunately, despite some advances we’re far from this vision.

Don't get ripped off

Our economy needs to be fair to consumers in order to function. While a company may make a short-term profit from ripping off consumers or putting an unsafe product on the market, it's not good for anyone in the long term.

Campaign | Waste

Don't Trash Maryland

We're working to build long-term support for a zero waste country by starting on campus and in our communities, putting the solutions in place and educating students about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Campaign | Energy

Energy Efficient Maryland

We have an energy problem.

  • Too much of our energy comes from dirty sources that threaten public health and harm our environment.
  • We needlessly waste energy by not using commonsense energy efficiency programs.

Energy Service Corps

Energy Service Corps helps people save energy, save the environment and save money all at the same time. We do that first by educating communities about energy efficiency -- in schools, at community events, and even at people's doorsteps! We also assist communities through service projects and events that help homeowners, local non-profits, and public officials achieve greater energy efficiency right away, sealing leaks around doors and windows, replacing old lightbulbs with more efficient CFLs and referring homeowners to local energy audit and retrofit services. In several states Energy Service Corps runs in partnership with AmeriCorps.

Campaign | Public Health

Healthy Kids, Healthy Maryland

We need to do more to regulate toxic chemicals and prevent vulnerable populations, like women of reproductive age, developing children and factory workers from being unwittingly exposed to toxic chemicals.

Campaign | Textbooks

Make Textbooks Affordable

Everyone knows that textbooks prices are outrageous. With student debt skyrocketing, young people can't afford to spend $1200 on books and supplies every year. Together, we can change that.

Campaign | Textbooks

Make Textbooks Affordable

Every student knows that textbook prices are outrageous! Many books cost over $200 a piece and end up worth pennies by the end of the semester, often thanks to unnecessary new editions and pass-codes that expire. It's time for publishers to stop charging ridiculous prices and start taking advantage of today's technology to offer students a better deal. Our campaign is working to increase the use of "open textbooks," which are free online, free to share, and affordable in print -- the ideal publishing model to make textbooks affordable.

New Voters Project

The New Voters Project is a non-partisan effort that engages, educates, and inspires young voters to be active participants in the political process. As the history of our successes demonstrate, our peer-to-peer organizing model achieves measurable increases in voter registration and voter turnout rates while building the next generation of civic leaders. Over the past 30 years, we have helped to register more than 1.7 million young people and made millions of get-out-the-vote reminders.

Campaign | Foods, Sustainability

No Bees, No Food

We rely on bees to pollinate our food. Yet we’re allowing the use of bee-killing pesticides to drive them toward extinction. How does that make any sense? We're calling on the EPA to ban these toxic pesticides.

Campaign | Democracy

Our Democracy

Special interest money has long had a corrosive effect on our politics, but in 2010, the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision unleashed a new era of unprecedented spending by a handful of millionaires and corporations on our elections.

Campaign | Foods

Stop Subsidizing Obesity

Our tax dollars should only go to things that serve the public good, yet we’re handing out taxpayer subsidies to big agribusinesses to help subsidize junk food. Huge, profitable corporations like Cargill and Monsanto are pocketing tens of billions in taxpayer dollars, and turning subsidized crops into junk food ingredients—including high fructose corn syrup.

Campaign | Foods, Public Health

Stop the Overuse of Antibiotics

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least 23,000 Americans die every year from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and warns that the widespread overuse of antibiotics on factory farms is putting our health at risk. We're calling on the top restaurant chains to commit to serving meat raised without anitbiotics.
